Oscar Peterson - En Concert Avec Europe 1 (1993)

This unusual anthology features excerpts from seven different concerts in Paris by Oscar Peterson between 1961 and 1969. The majority of the tracks feature the pianist with Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen; the music is consistently swinging and generally well recorded. Highlights include a blazing take of "Daahoud" and a foot-tapping "Six and Four." Roy Eldridge adds his superb muted trumpet to "But Not for Me" and "Main Stem." The two tracks from the second half of the 1960s feature bassist Sam Jones and either Louis Hayes or Bobby Durham on drums, all of whom are worthy successors to their predecessors in the trio. Although this isn't a key release in Oscar Peterson's formidable discography, it is worth picking up if you consider yourself a serious fan of his work.~ Ken Dryden
