Panhandle Rambler opens with a series of reflective songs with a west Texas and Mexican feel that bring to mind some of his best music. They create the warmth, compassion and appreciation of others that Ely's music has excelled in for so many years. There are true love songs to people he's close to, and deeply caring stories of people who are largely unknown and overlooked in society. Joe Ely is not afraid to reveal his (and our) most vulnerable thoughts and fears. It is particularly striking when he sings in "Wonderin' Where" about "That place you keep inside your heart, where only you can go. Like a shelter from this world, that only you can know" and "I'd wake up in the moonlight with a tear still in my eye, wonderin' where the dreams did go."
