Don Letts reputation has been firmly established in both the film and music world by a substantial body of work from the late70’s through to the millennium.
The Don came to notoriety in the late 70’s as the DJ that single-handily turned a whole generation of punks onto reggae, at the first punk club The Roxy.
Adopting the punk DIY ethic, Don made his first documentary ‘The Punk Rock Movie’, since which time he has directed over 400 videos to date for acts as diverse as Bob Marley and The Clash.
Musically, in the 1980s, he formed the group ‘Big Audio Dynamite’ with Mick Jones (ex-Clash), releasing four critically acclaimed albums and the hit single .
This compilation features the sounds that rocked the town long before Don became instrumental in introducing the sounds of reggae to his punk audiences at the Roxy and beyond.
The music released by Trojan records provided the soundtrack to an earlier British sub- culture, skinheads, back when the cropped heads lads and lasses were making a fashion not a fascist statement!
Simultaneously Trojan did the same for the first generation on British-born black population, with the companys releases providing the soundtrack to a particular period in Jamaican and British sub-culture.
Disc one, highlights 22 all killer no filler vocal classics selected from the Trojan vaults, while the second disc showcases Jamaicas finest legacy to popular music-bass culture.
