A note from the director the director in search of his composer is like the cinematographer w ithout his lights. The set is furnished, the actors are ready but w ithout illumination the emotional intent of the scene w ill be lost. I w anted music that refracted the feelings of loss and despair so piercingly performed by the sw edish actress alicia vikander. I did not w ant hollyw ood sentiment, a sugary medicine used to fool children in drinking the bitter truth of life. We wanted for testament of youth music for grow n ups: subtle and meaningful, lighting in shades. There are very few composers w ho retain their ow n voice in film like max. His interior aesthetic – those long held strings releasing gorgeous melodies – are more akin to sonorous tone poems. Max’s film scores successfully surround great acting, turning each moment into an aching, often sorrow ful truth. Having heard memoryhouse and the blue notebooks i knew here w as a composer whose intellectual mindset w as perfect for testament of youth. Imagine then my bitter disappointment when max’s schedule seemed simply impossible. He was fully booked! Then several months later - now w ell into the edit - w e re-approached. Max w ould indeed write the score – now under the ticking clock of testament of youth's impending premiere at the london film festival. Out of that creative cauldron emerges the extraordinary beauty and humanity of max's score for testament of youth. Somehow by combining german profundity w ith anglo-saxon pragmatism max captures brilliantly the beating heart that is vera brittain. he conjures the joy of her youth, the fire of her ambition, the depth of her love, the tragedy of her grief and the anger of her despair. But he also never forgets the drama of this terrible moment in history. Max’s music captures the full emotional force of vera’s heartbreaking act of remembrance to the lost generation.
