October 21st will mark the hundredth anniversary of Sir Malcolm Arnold, a very original figure of British 20th:century music, still popular in Great Britain, but also worldwide thanks to the soundtrack of the Bridge on the River Kwai. Mostly renowned for his movies scores and humorous pieces (the Grand Festival Overture for vacuum cleaners, for instance), he composed abundantly in all kinds of genres, especially the symphony. His pinnacle in the symphony genre may be his fifth, which received its Proms premiere a few weeks ago. It is here recorded by the composer himself with the CBSO and comes with the digital premiere of the complete Cornish Dances, a region he is closely associated with.
