Toby Jenkins - Island of Terror (2021)

Island Of Terror is the debut album from one Toby Jenkins, a gentleman of rare qualities and uncommon manners, originally from Somerton, England, now of San Francisco, California.

Some of the musically intrepid may have come across Jenkins’ walks on the wilder side of psychedelia and electronic experimentalism with his role as axe man, pianist, songwriter and occasional front person in releases by Fort Lauderdale, Zan Pan and Higamos Hogamos and The Squire of Somerton. This time Toby’s decided to go it alone on Island of Terror, an album designed to be an updated edition to the English psychedelic canon; an old-fashioned LP to tele-transport the listener to other realms at the end of the day. The album title hints at the adventure to come; of strange feats of imagination, other worlds, love, mystery and fantasy that awaits the listener as they take a trip to the Island of Terror...

Island of Terror was recorded over a number years and in a variety of studios, bedrooms and backrooms. It draws on such disparate musical threads as Giorgio Moroder, Serge Gainsbourg, Chopin, Steve Vai, Wendy Carlos and Syd Barret. It’s a record that weaves fantastical tales with the real, leaving the listener perplexed and enthralled in equal measure.
