Now on their third album, Kevin Costner & Modern West are steadily moving into the thick of the heartland with From Where I Stand. Much of the rootsier elements apparent on their debut, Untold Truths, have been sanded away, Costner returning often to his bedrock John Mellencamp influences, the band framing them as widescreen arena rock flourished with echoes borrowed from U2. If From Where I Stand is a throwback to anything, it's to 1990, when roots rockers were preserved under so much varnish that it carried the reflection of the listener's unspoken hopes and desires, and if those aren't quite the deep roots the Modern West intend to convey here, there's at least no doubt that this workingman's band is sincere in its nostalgia and capable of delivering country-ish rock with crisp, clean lines.
