Debussy's Images pour piano and Ravel's Miroirs probably rank among the finest and most frequently performed compositions in the piano literature of French Impressionism. With a sensitive touch and gentle virtuosity, the Viennese-born Andreas Donat retraces these miniatures and is capable of breathing life into scenes such as the 'Fool's Aubade' or impressions of bells, barques at sea, reflections on the water or melancholy birds.
These dazzling and poetic sound pictures that do not copy nature and mankind per se, but, like painting, always represent an interpretation by the composer, painter or performer allow us to view the worlds of Debussy and Ravel as in a mirror, hence the English title of this CD 'Through a Looking Glass'.
