Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Russian soul is mirrored in the incomparably authentic performance by the violinist Anna and her mother Irina Kandinskaja, piano, not least by virtue of their own Russian descent. Moreover, miniatures such as those of opus 42 or short pieces like the Valse Scherzo op. 34 or the Sérénade mélancholique op. 26 are highly suitable material due to their intensity and varied moods. Some of Tchaikovsky's songs also served Igor Stravinsky, similarly born in St. Petersburg, as the basis for his ballet The Fairy's Kiss, from which a four-movement divertimento emerged, here in an arrangement for violin and piano.

Irina Kandinskaja studied with Leonid Brumberg and Stanislav Neuhaus at St. Petersburg Conservatoire. At an early age, she gained extensive experience with chamber music and soon held concerts worldwide with eminent musicians such as Zino Vinnikov, Philip Hirschhorn, Mischa Maisky, Oleg Kagan, Boris Pergamenschikov or her long-standing duo partner, the cellist Natalia Gutman. Besides her busy concert activity, Irina Kandinskaja also teaches as a professor at Moscow Conservatoire.
Anna Kandinskaja, born in Moscow, studied at Moscow Conservatoire, the Music Academy in Bern and at the Royal College of Music in London. She has won international first prizes at the Konzertgesellschaft in Munich and at the Yehudi Menuhin Competition in Paris. She has appeared as a soloist with many orchestras, including the St. Petersburg Philharmonic and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London. Besides co-operating with musicians such as Gidon Kremer, Valerie Gergiev,Yuri Bashmet, Natalia Gutman, Miklos Perenyi, Wolfgang Sawallisch or Paul Gulda, she has been a lecturer for violin at the University of Music in Vienna since 2003. She also teaches at the Music Academy in Saarbrücken, the Royal Academy in London and Osaka Music Festival.
