LIGHT BLUE
Imagine six guitarists who want to express themselves trough their own compositions. Being more sincere is hardly possible, don’t you think? But the fairer you become, the more important it is to find the appropriate tonal language. The genre or mood or... that renders best what really needs to be told. Jazz, rock, folk, classical and modal music: they are all different ways of saying the same thing, for a subtle love confession, a trance-like wonder or ‘simply’ for unconcerned relaxation – “a sense of timelessness, compassionately contemplating human life”, as the Belgian composer Armand Coeck puts it further on. In doing so, choosing the guitar is almost self-evident. Fortunately, because a thorough knowledge of the idiom is indispensable in order to tell your story in a playful manner. And which instrument could better choose the guitar to frolic, fondle and spar with than the cello? The combination of these instruments not only offers a fertile soil for contemporary composers, but also makes a kind of symbiosis possible, an interesting path to having a real dialogue, thus generational peers Giorgio Mirto and Mathias Duplessy complement each other below. So there is room for an in-depth conversation, in light blue or other coloured atmospheres, as a stepping stone to self-discovery. The start of a lively journey that, in the words of Nathan Kolosko, is documented through his musical creations. An expedition where the destination is never a place, but a way to make new music. It’s in this kind of pioneering work that the Edenwood Duo finds its principal calling. Through commissions and creations, Catherine Struys and Wouter Vercruysse give an active and original impetus to the most fragile and therefore probably most beautiful of the arts.
EDENWOOD DUO
In 2016 Catherine Struys and Wouter Vercruysse decided to extend their partnership in love to the stage and founded the Edenwood Duo, based on the idea of bringing alive repertoire written originally for guitar and cello from the 1950s onwards. With their newest album, Light Blue, they continue this bold pioneering work with no fewer than three works recently written especially for them. Hence their tagline: discover tomorrow’s classics!
Edenwood Duo followed masterclasses with Sophie Hallynck and Guy Danel and since its creation has been performing both in Belgium and abroad. In November 2017 they were awarded second prize at the International Music Competition Léopold Bellan in Paris. At the Cap Ferret Music Festival, edition 2017, they were nominated as a ‘revelation’. Passionate and committed musicians, they have developed a powerful and expressive language in service of the works they interpret.
