Twelve years after the release of their noisy No Quarter debut, Jordan Redaelli and Tim Evans' Coconuts returns with another set of psychedelic dubwise fuzz, for fans of Sun Araw, Religious Knives or The Dead C. Best known for writing 'Silver Lights', a track that featured prominently on the soundtrack of hit indie game "Hotline Miami", NYC's Coconuts have been dormant for over a decade. Thankfully their return is just as impressive as their debut, dissolving '70s drug rock grooves into a more contemporary slop of noise, dub and drone modes. At its best "2" sounds like a Stooges record slowed down on wide mode, planing the tops of their songs and diluting everything in pools of echo and reverb. Just swing over to 'Paramount / Broth of Brothers' with its low-slung bass and horizontal grindhouse noise, or 'Disgusted' for a hit of spiraling guitar distortion and wordless vocal grit. Somehow even through the layers of industrial FX, "2" is never self-consciously dark, instead balancing on a druggy axis of weed 'n acid - it's more internal exploration than external terror.
