Under the title "Into the Light," this CD brings together organ works recorded on all five organs of Bremen Cathedral by cathedral organist Stephan Leuthold. Since 2002, a single-manual instrument with pedal has been available on the cathedral's high choir for the musical arrangement of weddings, communion services and concerts, built by organ builder Kristian Wegscheider from Dresden.
The sound is based on the Saxon organ building of the 18th and early 19th centuries in the succession of Gottfried Silbermann. Today, the east crypt houses a small organ built in 1991 by Gerrit Klop from Garderen in Holland. The instrument was built as an "Organo di legno" (with exclusively wooden pipes) in the Italian Renaissance style. The Bremen Cathedral received its first so-called "Bach organ" in 1939. During the war and in the post-war years, the instrument was badly damaged and was replaced in 1966 by a new organ built by Gebr. van Vulpen (Utrecht).
This work stands on the east wall of the north nave. The Silbermann organ was probably built in the winter of 1732 / 33. in 1734 it had already stood in the village church in Etzdorf / Saxony. The Bremen Cathedral Cantor Richard Liesche, a native of the vicinity of Dresden, acquired the instrument in 1939 for the Bremen Cathedral. in 1993 a restoration began by Kristian Wegscheider. Today, almost 75% of Silbermann's pipe material is preserved in the organ. The most famous predecessor instrument of the present main organ of the Bremen Cathedral was the three-manual organ built by Arp Schnitger in 1698.
The present instrument was built in 1894 by Wilhelm Sauer with 65 stops on 3 manuals and pedal. in 1905 a 4th manual was added. Christian Scheffler (Frankfurt / O.) began in 1993 with the restoration and the restoration of the original disposition with some extensions in the spirit of Sauer and the adoption of some stops from the 1920s and 1930s. The number of stops today is 98.
