Michel Legrand - The Very Best Of Michel Legrand (1990)

To issue a single-disc best- or worst-of soundtrack, composer Michel Legrand is an intimidating prospect. This 16-track volume from Sweden's budget label, Skyline, does a super job of getting all the major stuff into one place with awesome digitally remastered sound to boot. Beginning with "The Windmills of Your Mind" from the original Thomas Crown Affair and themes from Summer of '42 and The Go-Between ("I Still See You"), the collection includes some surprises, namely the inclusion of "Sea and Sky," with a vocal by Dusty Springfield, and "A Place in Paris," sung by Matt Munro. Legrand is tough to pin down when it comes to his cinema music, and in the selections "Pavane for People," "On the Road," "The Street Where They Lived," "Concerto for Cabs," and "Old Lovers Never Die," the listener can hear his incredible orchestral and popular dexterity and diversity. Legrand's music is always very sweet -- not as drippingly honey-textured as, say, Francis Lai, perhaps, but nonetheless lushly decorated. His sense of drama is uncanny and his sense of understatement in a poignant moment can be breathtaking -- provided the film warrants it. This is a solid single-disc collection that highlights Legrand's many stylistic variances and provides a fine portrait of the artist in anthology form for a fine price.~Thom Jurek
