Karen Cecilie Cæsar - Low Season (2022) [Hi-Res]

Partly written during the universal “low season” of COVID lockdowns and a time of personal loss and grief, ghosts are everywhere on KAREN CECILIE CÆSAR's debut album "Low Season", which will be released on 11.11.22. Even her instruments are imbued with a storied past: most of them date back to the 1960s, which lends the album a dusty, melancholic texture. Her family’s pedal organ, an heirloom that hasn’t been repaired since 1939, opens the album with an insistent and haunting presence.
It’s not all gloomy self-reflection, however. Just like the cold and isolated low season in her Danish seaside town, it’s also a sacred pause and chance for renewal before epic days of sunshine and a surge of new visitors. This dichotomy is present in the album’s content as well as Karen’s ranging folk-noir vocals.
In classic folk-music tradition, there are songs of protest and social commentary. “Foxhole” imagines the end of the world, depicting modern life as plagued by overconsumption and overthinking, painting all of us as “kids with fancy things” who “want it all when we need less.”
It all ends on a hopeful note, under the “Cold Moon of December” and with the album’s postludium “New Year’s Day” – concluding what Cæsar has deftly illustrated so far: there is light to pull from our darkest hours.
