The Isley Brothers released just six singles and two albums in the USA during
their 1966-’68 tenure at Motown. Rougher and tougher sounding than their label
mates the Temptations and the Four Tops, the Cincinnati, Ohio trio’s R&B
recordings struck a chord over the water with the burgeoning northern soul
scene and as a vital part of the youth club disco play list. As a result they found
their Tamla Motown 45s were making the UK chart, as they were peddling a
funkier, rockier sound on their own label T-Neck. In 1969, a year free of their
Motown contract, their Motown songs, the phenomenal I Guess I’ll Always Love
You, Behind A Painted Smile and Put Yourself In My Place (the latter two
released as singles only in the UK) hit the Top 15, with Behind A Painted Smile
making the Top 5. Their current single It’s Your Thing, a momentous funk
number, meanwhile, released on Major Minor in the UK made the Top 30 the
same year. In their home country it was their biggest hit to date, their first to hit
the US R&B top spot, a pop Number 2 and their only song to garner them
a Grammy Award.
