About the Album Pioneering musicians, most notably Antonio Carlos Jobim, Luiz Bonfá and João Gilberto, began slowing down the tempo of samba, an upbeat dance style rooted in Africa that is the most significant music of Carnival celebrations. They also stripped the rhythm down to a simplified beat, overlaid sophisticated chord progressions influenced by American jazz and sang poetic lyrics in a relaxed style. In 1959, bossa nova was introduced to the world through the Oscar-winning film Black Orpheus. The genre’s global popularity exploded five years later when American saxophonist Stan Getz collaborated with João Gilberto on the 1964 albumGetz / Gilberto. It featured Gilberto’s wife Astrud singing an English version of “The Girl from Ipanema.” The song was an instant global hit and went onto be one of the most beloved and covered melodies in the world.​We’ve long had an affinity for Brazilian music and are pleased to present exceptionally talented artists who are keeping the heart and soul of bossa nova alive and well.
