For the past two years I’ve been writing and recording an album called Seven Stones. These eleven songs are the most vulnerable, honest songs I’ve ever written.
Something about this time in the world and this time in my life has made me want to be as real as possible, both onstage and off. It’s not that I hadn’t been real before, but I knew there were things I needed to say and hadn’t yet, things I was scared to talk about. Actually, for a while the working title of this record was Things Katie Dahl Finds Hard to Say.
For example, I felt bad about my body, the way a lot of us do, and I wrote songs about it. I publicly came out as queer for the first time, and I wrote songs about it. Some of my longest-standing friendships started to change, and I wrote about them. My dad died suddenly, and I wrote songs about it.
And you know what? There is so much joy to be found in the moments when you let yourself be really seen. So this album is bright and joyful at the same time as it’s grounded and real.
