Having just completed a quintet swing recording, and while we still had Luciano Troja here from Sicily, we decided to go back in the studio the next day to record some of my larger works in a chamber music setting. I tried to write the experience of witnessing the Aurora Borealis over the years up in Alaska. It starts as a slight glimmer and eventually expands and explodes into a full curtain of awesome dancing color. The movement of this sky lead me right into Tango. What if the Moon came from a painting my wife, Denise, was working on with her students. While they worked on the piece, some of my previously recorded music was playing. At some point one of the students blurted out. “What if the Moon were made out of Jazz”. I liked it and wrote the music to the painting! Harmony Waltz is the second movement of a larger piece not yet recorded and has to do with how we need to get along in this universe. We felt good about both takes, so we kept them. Evolution refers to the fact that we have to keep changing in order to find peace and joy. In a Dwam came from the covid experience. It seems as if the entire world was in some kind of trance or stupor and we are hopefully just coming out of it. We liked both of these takes also and they are so different from each other, that we decided to include them both.
We recorded with keyboard, various horns, various stringed instruments and percussion. There is a great intensity in the listening and responding to each other that made this so much fun to do. Hope you enjoy it.
