Holly is Johnny Jewel's first solo effort since 2018's Themes For Television, which featured music he wrote for David Lynch's Twin Peaks. In a recent interview, Johnny & Fien talked about working together on this project. Mixed in Amsterdam in April 2023, Holly premiered in Official Competition at the Venice Film Festival last week. The film received five-star reviews from press around the world and a standing ovation from audiences.
"I used music to express the intangible elements of Holly's story. To emphasize the supernatural overtones of the film, I studied the wind in her hair and the smoke rising from the burning high school. , and gazed deep into the howling forest swaying in the distance. The looming music foreshadows and mirrors her talent. As Holly's character gradually unravels, the score moves ominously slowly. It starts to stretch and contort.”
