...Dogbowl doesn't delve into political issues, but there are parallels aplenty between this stuff and The Fugs' more romantic, poetic material. It's fairly light, tuneful, and folk-psychedelic, with Blake-on-acid lyrical imagery and vocals that walk the line between affecting sincerity and affectionate parody...Pretty harmonies, constantly ascending/descending '60s-ish chord progressions, and varied instrumentation (with prominent weedy organs and clarinet in addition to the expected guitars and drums). Lots of cute little phrases that don't mean anything in particular but nonetheless strike a warm chord, like "dead strawberries are haunting me" and "if I were a pigeon, would you be my seagull?..." Nothing like the usual in-your-face Kramer dementia (he, needless to say, produced and plays on this), its pleasures are modest but praiseworthy.
