Pianist Niels Lan Doky's second date as a leader (he was 23 at the time) is as worthy as the first one. With bassist Niels Pedersen and drummer Jack DeJohnette, once again Lan Doky performs five hard bop-based originals, plus a lone standard, "Autumn in New York." Sometimes showing the slight influence of Oscar Peterson, Lan Doky more than holds his own with his illustrious sidemen. It seems strange that Niels Lan Doky (born in Denmark) has not become better known to American jazz audiences, for he is quite talented.
Danish master pianist Niels Lan Doky is now releasing his album The Target in a remastered version ensuring crystal clear sound using modern technology. The Target was originally released in 1987 as Lan Doky’s second album as a bandleader.
The Target features the late great Danish bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and one of the most consistently inventive jazz percussionists, the legendary Jack DeJohnette. The album showcases a young, fresh-faced Lan Doky, only 23 years old, proving his remarkable talent and astonishingly musical maturity. The musical collaboration results in a trio conception that's remarkably unified based on a first meeting.
Lan Doky states: “The album was recorded in Woodstock at the end of 1986 with Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and Jack DeJohnette on drums. A real dream team. I’m incredibly proud of the album. It’s my second album and I was very young at the time and nervous playing with the two legends. I’m very excited about the new remastered version.”
