pel mel began in 1979 in Newcastle, Australia, playing to a turnout of dole bludgers, students and the under-age. In 1980 they escaped to Sydney and released their first single, ‘No Word from China’. Two albums and several singles of alt pop followed, and pel mel toured with artists such as the Birthday Party, the Go-Betweens, New Order, the Fall, Elvis Costello and more.
