This recording is highly interesting, not least of all because of the rarity of its instrument, the tabla tarang. This is a set of some ten to 16 tuned tablas. Tarang literally means waves and the skill lies in creating percussion variations and effects. Born in the Tangail district of East Bengal in 1928, Kamalesh Maitra, his family's background was in Ayurvedic medicine and music did not look a likely career. Fate intervened and what had been a pastime became a career when he was recruited by Uday Shankar to work on Discovery of India around 1947-48. He would remain with Uday Shankar's dance troupe for over 20 years. He went on to join the George Harrison and Ravi Shankar Dark Horse touring party in the early ‘70s. Fascinating music. Kumar Bose accompanies on tabla. ~ Ken Hunt
