Arrivé à la composition (en particulier auprès de Gérard Pesson) par la route sinueuse de l’improvisation (à l’alto) – il aime mêler la netteté et le contraste de l’une à l’ardeur et l’emballement de l’autre –, le français Maël Bailly, dont le penchant pour l’écriture est de plus en plus prononcé depuis qu’il a découvert le pendant de la plume qu’est la gomme, met volontiers sa musique au service de la scène et de l’image. Une musique à l’ironie palpable, souvent facétieuse, comme dans "Contreclairon" (crée pour l'Ensemble Alternance en 2021) pour flûte, alto et trompette où celle-ci tourne le dos à son rôle traditionnel d’instrument coloré et étincelant – et dont le premier mouvement met à l’épreuve les instrumentistes qui ne disposent que de diapasons, d’une boîte en bois et de micros. Pour celui dont l’engagement se concrétise par sa participation à "La Crécelle", le journal du Conservatoire en lutte, "La quatrième pomme", pour quatuor à cordes, fait écho à l’utopie de Charles Fourier, qui rêvait de passer d’un système marchand à une société fraternelle et passionnée. Maël Bailly's music undoubtedly bears the imprint, rather than the weight, of his composer mentor Gérard Pesson, for the elder Bailly is gifted with a wellknown benevolence and generosity. A respectful distance from a heritage that has been accepted and fulfilled, and a singular and facetious imagination, encourage emancipation. Maël Bailly's musical style is already clear. Numerous works are emerging, with instrumentations and styles as eclectic as they are surprising. Maël Bailly is resolutely of his time. He is one of those who develop a form of living discourse that offers at every moment many possible paths towards his own future. (Brian Ferneyhough) The musical flow is leaping, bouncing, stomping, boiling. The sound textures whirl around in a wide spectrum of fumaroles of colours, both finely chiselled and sometimes melting like magma. In this game of hands or sonic hopscotch, as Maël Bailly himself calls it, the sounds develop, continue and imitate each other in a rhythmic whirlwind that is at times relentlessly robotic and at other times endowed with a suspenseful elasticity that gives the discourse a new dimension. At other times, they are endowed with a suspenseful elasticity that gives the discourse the singular impression of hesitating, especially when it evolves in an open form. The improvising spirit is often lurking in the shadows.
