Sophia Chablau e uma Enorme Perda de Tempo - Música do Esquecimento (2023) [Hi-Res]

Two years past the release of their self-titled debut record, Brasilian indie rock band Sophia Chablau e Uma Enorme Perda de Tempo presents its second studio album: MÚSICA DO ESQUECIMENTO, released by SELO RISCO, and produced by Vitor Araújo.

MÚSICA DO ESQUECIMENTO bears witness to a band in permanent mutation, recounting adventures familial, romantic, sexual, philosophical, aesthetic; dealing with the manic excitement of being young and having a band; tirelessly pursuing unique, interesting sounds for contemporary songs in portuguese.

The record's lengthy production process began during the pandemic: with their plans suspended for the foreseeable future, the four bandmates chose to take a few steps forward, by arranging new songs in a few creative retreats in 2020 and 2021. Only in 2022, though, did they manage to go into the studio once again - and then, these pandemic songs began to take on new forms.

The input of pianist and composer VITOR ARAÚJO led them to unexpected landscapes. A denser sound - string arrangements, textural layers and other intricate timbral explorations. The artist and music producer ANA FRANGO ELÉTRICO, working together with Vitor, brought the songs to a new level - making sure, with their attentive ears, that all these crazy experiments remained dynamic and intelligible. And, to top it off, the presence of composer NEGROLÉO as a guest vocalist in the track Quem vai apagar a luz was decisive.

In the end, a new record emerged, very different from the previous one. Longer and denser. Fourteen tracks intertwined in a chaotic but surprisingly coherent way. While in their debut album every song pointed towards a different direction, now they seem to have found a distinct sound to call their own. That does not mean less musical diversity, in fact quite the contrary! Their strange mix of pop and noise, sweetness and heaviness remains there - poppier, noisier, sweeter, heavier - in the symbiotic chemistry between bassist TÉO SERSON and drummer THEO CECATO, pounding together like a beating heart. In the noisy experiments of guitarist VICENTE TASSARA, in his eccentric approach to the guitar parts. In the artful songwriting of SOPHIA CHABLAU - balancing the bluntness of a pop chorus with the delicateness of a thoughtful poetic verse - as well as her many contributions as an instrumentalist, playing acoustic and electric guitar, as well as keyboards and drums in a few tracks. And, with all that notwithstanding, it features songwriting contributions from all four members, distancing itself even further from the singer-songwriter backed by a power trio format of the previous release.

MÚSICA DO ESQUECIMENTO is yet another unexpected leap forward in the group's trajectory, insisting on writing songs that avoid the obvious, and on trying to figure out non-obvious ways of playing and singing them. In the track Qualquer Canção, Sophia sings "I won't write a song just to say whatever I'm feeling right now". In writing a song about not just writing any song, she expresses the paradox in which they seem to have entangled themselves. And, in this paradox, the heart of the whole project: an attempt, by means of their cautious sonic and poetic explorations, to open new paths so that, someday, may "someone somewhere else discover another word".
