Anders Thomsen has recently released a knee slappin,’ juke joint stompin’ honky tonk album, Antlers. It was recorded in Savannah GA at Rev Bro Diddley’s Holy House by Ty Thompson and also at The Back Room Recording Studio by Andrew Sovine. Antlers was produced by Anders Thomsen, mixed and mastered by Blake Tallent.
Anders launches the album with honky tonk and a little county yodeling out loud right from the get go, in “Internet,” a song about how everybody expects a song about how you fell in love, your truck broke down, and something they already know, and then you have to put this song on the internet and try to make a living that way. Strange times. “Silver Lining” keeps the pace with more classic up tempo in a song about that one thing we all need: a silver lining to this mess we’re in.
In “Over Yonder” the music takes us back to Tennessee, a touch of piano, and a dance with a special lady and “it’s honky tonkin’ time again, run-in’ with my wilder friends, burning every two-bit juke joint down.”
In “Burn Me Up” the band switches up to a bit more of a fast paced bluesy basis but the party continues, and buckle up, we’re going for a ride with hot hot stuff. “Brand New Old Flame” sketches out the plan for the night, even though the the same things over and over again.
This is a great summer party album, for turning up around the fire pit down by the river. Kick your boots up, let your hair down, turn it up and have the time of your life – it’s on Anders Thomsen. That’s the crux of this album. And underneath the honky tonkin’ is good solid music.
