Jeff Jerolamon, a talented drummer with a lot of experience by 1991, finally made his recording debut at the age of 37 with this disc. Born in New Jersey, he moved to Europe in the early '80s, settling in Spain where he worked with top local musicians, expatriates, and touring Americans. On this trio set, pianist George Cables is a major asset with his vast knowledge in making music and of making recordings helping to guide the group. Jerolamon takes plenty of short breaks and utilizes "Straight, No Chaser" as a duet piece with bassist Javier Colina but is also content much of the time to accompany Cables and inspire his sidemen. The music opens and closes with a standard, and there is also a trio of bop classics, Bobby Hutcherson's "Little B's Poem," and two excellent songs by Cables. Jerolamon, whose solos have an unusual and distinctive tone, is impressive throughout his debut.
