Two violins, a viola, a cello - there is hardly a genre that embodies European classical music more than the string quartet 'invented' by Joseph Haydn. The members of Latin Strings, all trained in this musical tradition, live and work mainly in Germany - but they grew up in Chile and Venezuela. On their debut CD, they return musically to Latin America and build a double bridge between the cultures: biographically and stylistically. They find their roots, "raíces" in Spanish, not only in their home countries, but throughout Latin America. The music of this continent is characterized by a centuries-long mixture of indigenous, European and African influences, as well as socio-cultural developments. Nationally, different (stereo) types have developed in folk and art music, ranging from distinctive rhythms to their own instruments - a stylistic diversity or, in their words, a unity with many nuances in which the four young musicians feel at home across national borders. In "Raíces", they trace these facets in older and contemporary works by four Latin American composers and find their roots in Chile, Argentina, Venezuela and Brazil.
