Partially recorded live at the 'Café Luso', located in the old stable of 'Palácio de S. Roque', Lisbon, in December 1955.
Amalia No Cafe Luso is an excellently recorded set by Amalia recorded at the well known fado club Cafe Luso. Mysteriously, although the session was taped in December 1955, EMI didn't release the recording until 1976 on a now rare double LP with photo booklet. I haven't been able to find out who made the recording but it does Not sound like a bootleg or private recording so I have to assume that this was done by EMI engineers. One reason why EMI might have sat on it was the release of another live concert LP, Amalia a L'Olympia Paris issued a year later.
Comparing the two LPs is instructive. Amalia is very relaxed and sings well in the Olympia LP but in the Cafe Luso concert she is singing with utmost intensity. The closeness of the mics reveals all the little inflections of her voice. A few songs are present on both albums and fans can compare them. The Olympia LP is also recorded well and is perhaps a bit more polished.
In short one of the greatest fado albums ever.
