Here jazz draws its themes from the heart of old Europe and teaches them to America. Stan Getz brings Dear Old Stockholm from Sweden, and Louis Armstrong is the first to pick up on Just a Gigolo, an Austrian song written by an Italian. In the Paris of Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli, the trumpeter discovered La Vie en rose and Sidney Bechet nicely adapted the French Au clair de la lune. You might say C’est si bon!

Much more than any other European melodies, there were of course many English-language songs that were taken up and adapted by Count Basie, Jimmie Lunceford, Benny Carter and Art Tatum, all of them jazzmen from vast America. Folk songs, nursery-rhymes and music-hall airs all animated the swing of the New World. Immigrants also came from Eastern Europe, and Russians, Hungarians and Czechs all contributed their musical traditions to the melting-pot of jazz.
