“Some critics accuse me of being a clown,” said Armstrong one day. He was a “vaudeville” musician in the theatrical tradition of the “Negro” entertainers they called “darky minstrels”. But being a clown is something wonderful. Making people happy, that’s what true happiness is. We’d forgotten that, but jazz is funny. It could have been the title of this amazing collection of what’s best in burlesque swing. From the vocal “non-sense” of the singing clown Slim Gaillard to the bluesy hooting of Shelly Manne, from the bebop delirium of Gillespie to the zaniness of Spike Jones, anything’s possible here, except keeping a straight face.
