The Smiths are a British rock band formed in 1982 in Manchester (England) and subsequently recognized by critics as one of the most important alternative rock bands in Britain, emerging from the indie rock of the 1980s. Seven of the band's albums rose to the top of the UK Indie Charts (according to this indicator, The Smiths were ahead of Depeche Mode and New Order). The Smiths' music had a significant impact on the development of rock, in particular, on britpop (The Stone Roses, Blur, Suede, Oasis, The Libertines, Doves).

The Smiths is the debut studio album by English rock band The Smiths, released on February 20, 1984 on Rough Trade Records. After Troy Theta's original production was deemed inadequate, John Porter re-recorded the album in London, Manchester and Stockport during breaks in the band's UK tour in September 1983.
