The second album from bassist Christian Dillingham, Halcyon is an ambitious new jazz album, with six original compositions as well as versions of classic songs by Bob Dylan, Duke Ellington & Gillian Welch. Christian spent much of the time leading up to this album in contemplation of halcyon days. The death of his father in September weeks before the release of his first album Cascades just weeks later, and a slate of performance commitments - set him adrift on an emotional sea. He navigated it, in part, by leaning on his wife (“the rock of our family,” honored in “Dimepiece”) and his own children; by recalling conversations with his dad; by writing many of these songs. These experiences shape the soul of this recording, not by sloshing in the past, but by mapping the present from a changed perspective.
