Shelly Manne - Hot Coles (2024)

A surprisingly great little album -- despite a very stupid cover! The concept of the "Coles" in the title is that all the songs on the record are Cole Porter compositions -- but unlike other Porter tribute records, which are fairly traditional, Manne takes the tracks in a hip 70s style that often features some nice electric playing and some slyly funky rhythms. The players on the set are great -- and include Tom Scott on flute and soprano sax, Moacir Santos on percussion, Victor Feldman on piano, and Mike Wofford on electric piano -- all working together in a hip Flying Dutchman vibe that's very different than what you might expect from a usual "songbook" setting! Titles include "Love For Sale", "All Of You", "Begin The Beguine", "Easy To Love", "Get Out Of Town", and "Night & Day".
