Riad Awwad - The Intifada 1987 (2023) [Hi-Res]

In 1987, just a week after the First Intifada began, Riad recorded The Intifada album with his sisters on self-made equipment. One track was co-written with Palestinian writer Mahmoud Darwish. Riad printed 3000 cassette copies, distributing them in Jerusalem and the West Bank, but the Israeli Army confiscated most of them. Riad was arrested and detained for months. After his release, he formed a band, Palestinian Union, and started a school offering music education in the West Bank. Tragically, Riad died in a car accident in 2005, but his legacy endures.

In 2020, during the first lockdown, Mo’min Swaitat, a music collector, purchased over five thousand cassettes, including The Intifada album, from a former record label owner in Jenin.
