Susan Barrett - Mixed Emotions (1959)

Susan Barrett sings about love's varied moods -- and gets some pretty great help here from Kenyon Hopkins -- an arranger who's got plenty of great moods of his own! Barrett's vocals have this deep-ranged style that's less swinging than you might expect for a singer working with Hopkins -- but his jazzy flourishes on the upbeat tracks really help push a new sort of groove out of Susan -- while still letting her stick in more familiar modes on the album's more laidback track! The set's got a nice range of styles, and is a real lost vocal treasure on Capitol -- with titles that include "Mixed Emotions", "Should I", "Hey There", "Run Away", and "Laughing On The Outside".
