Hildegunn Øiseth, a Norwegian jazz trumpeter and bukkehorn player, is known for her innovative approach to music, blending jazz with global and Scandinavian folk traditions. After studying music and performing with Sweden's Bohuslän Big Band, she explored the musical connections between South African, Sami, and Norwegian traditions, and even discovered links between the Pakistani raga and Norwegian folklore through the goat horn.

Øiseth integrates the goat horn’s haunting, archaic sound into her modern jazz compositions, using effects and improvisation to create emotional depth. Her quartet, formed with encouragement from Norwegian sound engineer Jan Erik Kongshaug, includes Espen Berg (piano), Magne Thormodsæter (bass), and Per Oddvar Johansen (drums), providing a harmonious platform for her stylistic experiments.

On her fifth album, Garden on the Roof, Øiseth refines her jazz language, featuring interplay between trumpet, goat horn, and vocals. Tracks like "Prelude to Waking" highlight the goat horn’s integration into improvisational jazz, while "Luringen" combines folk-inspired melodies with a modern groove. Special guest Nils-Olav Johansen adds layers of depth with his guitar and vocals, as seen in tracks like "Pups and Cups" and "In Limbo."

The album also reflects Øiseth’s political consciousness. "About Peace" advocates for a nuanced understanding of global conflicts, and "Refugee Anthem" honors refugees who lost their lives seeking better futures. Garden on the Roof showcases Øiseth’s artistry, combining global musical influences with profound emotional and political statements.
