"Purple Night" is a 1990 studio album by jazz pioneer Sun Ra, released under A&M Records. Recorded in November 1989 at BMG Studios in New York City, the album features a 22-piece ensemble, including notable musicians such as Don Cherry on pocket trumpet, June Tyson on violin and vocals, and John Gilmore on tenor saxophone. The tracklist comprises seven compositions, predominantly by Sun Ra, with the exception of "Stars Fell on Alabama," written by Mitchell Parish and Frank Perkins. This album was part of a brief collaboration with A&M Records, following the earlier release of "Blue Delight." Additional recordings from these sessions were later issued in the album "Somewhere Else" by Rounder Records. "Purple Night" is currently out of print in physical format but remains accessible through digital platforms.
