A surprisingly great later performance by Charles Tolliver – recorded near the end of the 80s, but with a really solid Strata East sound! The set's a live one – recorded in Germany with a lineup that includes Tolliver on trumpet, Alain Jean-Marie on piano, Ugonna Okegwo on bass, and Ralph Van Duncan on drums. Although the lineup isn't that of Tolliver's classic Music Inc group, the overall feel is very similar – thanks in large part to the strength of Tolliver's compositions, which really work around a classic 70s modal approach to soul jazz!

"The talented, if underrecorded and underrecognized trumpeter Charles Tolliver is well showcased on this quartet date. Assisted by pianist Alain Jean-Marie, bassist Ugonna Okegwo and drummer Ralph Van Duncan, Tolliver shows that he was still in prime form, stretching out during lengthy renditions of four of his originals including "On the Nile." The music is modern modal jazz, and Tolliver's tone and adventurous style perfectly fit the idiom." (Scott Yanow, AMG)
