Stunningly great album by Mark Murphy, recorded in the UK in the mid-60s for the mostly-rock Immediate label -- but certainly one of his best from that decade! The album sees the American jazz singer teaming up with Kenny Napper, Ronnie Scott's bassist, on a set of arrangements that are completely different from those on other Murphy albums -- especially his American ones. In fact, the sound and style is very similar to that used on some of the early Scott Walker solo albums -- which is no surprise since Napper, in Ronnie Scott's band, backed up Walker during his rare solo live engagements. The album also boasts other British jazz greats -- like Tony Coe, Kenny Baker, and Alan Branscombe -- and it's got a beautifully airy quality that works perfectly with Murphy's rich, tightly-controlled voice. Titles include "Star Sounds", "You'd Better Love Me", "In Love for The Very First Time", "Talk To Me Baby", "That's What Makes A Girl", and "Who Can I Turn To?". Nice one!
