Winyo, Fancy Fingers - Jawaya Jathum (2025) [Hi-Res]

Jawaya Jathum (“The Guitarist and Music Lover”) is a 13-track Luo-language collaboration between Kenyan artists Winyo (Shipton Onyango) and Fancy Fingers (Polycarp Otieno). Rooted in Luo heritage, the album braids the timbres of nyatiti lyre and orutu fiddle with Afro-pop, benga drive, jazz inflections, zouk swing and bhangra energy. Fancy Fingers’ layered guitars and production bring genre-spanning color, while Winyo’s soulful vocals channel classic benga and Afro-fusion storytelling. Lyrically the record explores love, land, community and resilience. Standouts include the high-octane “Pokunena” featuring orutu virtuoso George Achieng of Kenge Kenge, the cautionary tale “Duog Dala,” and “Jowo,” reimagined from Sauti Sol’s Midnight Train sessions. Guest turns by TheOnlyRosa (“Nyar Alego”) and Lisa Oduor Noah (“Inemara”) further broaden a project hailed for marrying tradition with modern flair.
