On more than a dozen albums and several compilations, American-born Briton Stacy Kent performed top-class songs with grace and skill, but perhaps her fans did not expect such a result on this CD. In the program, performed entirely in French, Kent imagines himself to be a modern-day Edith Piaf with a very restrained, romantic approach typical of late nights. Her thin, delicate voice is almost invisible in these compositions, and pianist Graham Harvey, guitarist John Parricelli and, in some places, her husband, saxophonist Jim Tomlinson, participate in a small instrumental part. Most of the tracks are French pop songs, but sometimes Kent inserts something sonorous, for example, the invariably delightful "Les Eaux de Mars" by Antonio Carlos Jobim (March Waters), and adds a Brazilian flavor to the title track or calypso in the most energetic composition "Mi Amor". The flawless sound of Harvey's piano is an eloquent example of how this music inspires Kent to dive into the depths of her soul without summoning demons or falling into extroversion. Although there are times when the band swings, goes into a circular motion, or performs a jazz standard ("It Might As Well Be Spring"), Kent and her friends mostly stick to ballads and rousing songs. This is her second album on the Blue Note label, which is likely to be of interest to European audiences rather than Americans, but it is sincere and soulful, regardless of the text and language.
