Over the centuries, the spirit of the dance has bonded music of all forms. Though infinitely varied, music that inspires the dance shares an intangible essence: part rhythm, part melody, it makes the body move. Pianist Gloria Cheng's tribute to 20th century dance taps into this powerful force, producing an album as ambitious and varied as it is successful.

From the familiar strains of Ravel's Waltz IV from 'Valses Nobles et Sentimentales' to the irrepressible sensuality of Donald R. Davis' "Illicit Felicity," the music is rich with surprises. Migues del Aguila's 'Congo' provides a lively climax to an album full of refreshing twists. Philip Glass's 'Modern Love Waltz' leads to the work of an earlier American innovator, Henry Cowell's "Lilt of the Reel." Each piece shines light on a different aspect of the dance, each is rewarding in a unique way.

Cheng's piano delves deeper into the music, past the rhythms to find the essence. An excellent soloist with an ear for new music as well as early pieces, she creates a delightful overview of 20th century dance.~Piano Dance: A 20th-Century Portrait Review by AllMusic
