"Jazzactuel" is a three-disc box set released by the Charly label. It serves as a collection of avant-garde and free jazz from the catalogue of the legendary French label, BYG Actuel. The recordings featured on the compilation were primarily made between 1969 and 1971, reflecting the revolutionary spirit of that era in music. The compilation showcases iconic artists of American and European free jazz, such as the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Sun Ra, Archie Shepp, Don Cherry, and Anthony Braxton. The album documents one of the most intense and creatively liberated periods in jazz history, when many American musicians relocated to Paris, finding a more receptive environment for their bold musical experiments.
