Born in Santos Suárez, a Havana neighborhood, on August 7, 1922, José Tejedor Sibate distinguished himself as a composer, guitarist, and performer. His musical career was not easy for this brilliant singer, who boasted a crystalline and in-tune voice that was unforgettable.
Tejedor Sibate followed the same path as all of us dreamers who insisted on entering the ineffable world of art. With tenacity and an awareness of his artistic quality, he never wavered, and thus appeared on "The Supreme Court of Art," a program on the CMQ radio station, a creator of great figures in Cuban art. Tejedor appeared on the program without much fanfare.
But days of unbridled struggles lay ahead for this performer, such as: his condition as a poor, black, and blind artist in a racist society, his 255-pound frame, and his height of six feet, two inches—all conspired against his legitimate and longed-for artistic endeavor.
As perseverance triumphs, as my father used to say, the blind singer found several alternatives: One was to meet with Luis Oviedo Medero in 1959, and the other was to try to record a record, to whom no one could lie, nor allow deception of any kind. Another option Tejedor had was to perform both dance and live shows. It's essential to note that he did very few on television.
Luís Oviedo always sang in a falsetto voice, not in a second voice, as has been mentioned, meaning a third or a bass line above the first voice. It's also true to say that he performed half of the piece over what Tejedor sang, and the duet was very enjoyable.
The first record company to show interest in José Tejedor was the small Rosy record label, which in 1959 recorded him alongside pianist and arranger Javier Vázquez.
Later, the Discuba record company hired him to record a group of works under its acronym.
José Tejedor's recordings sold like hotcakes, and the Discuba record label wasted no time in recording his second LP, 566, entitled "Amor en trago - Tejedor y su grupo." The same as the previous one. CMQ February 15, 1960. Reissued on CD (1991).
With the rise of this blind man, who sang boleros so beautifully, and especially Moorish boleros, the Areito record label hired him to make a few albums accompanied by Javier Vázquez's group, titled "Cuando estas muy sola." It is only fair to clarify that Tejedor Sibate performs some numbers alone and others with Luis Oviedo's falsetto...
