Javier Vázquez was born in Havana in 1936 and grew up in the rumba neighborhood of Jesús María. His father was a founder of Sonora Matancera, so his childhood revolved around conga and rumba groups, and the guarachas and boleros of Sonora. After studying violin, he went on to play piano in Jóvenes del Cayo, had an orchestra called Los Hijos de la Sonora Matancera, and then joined Sonora in 1957. In 1966, he moved to the United States and began working with Alegre and eventually with Fania. In 1974, he recorded a curious album, La Verdad (The Truth), signed by Javier Vázquez and his Salsa for Alegre Records, which was part of Brandson Music, or Tico Records, before it was transferred to Fania..
