Cortijo Y Su Combo - Vol. 2 (1971)

Rafael "Rafa" Cortijo Verdejo (1928-1982) was a prominent Puerto Rican percussionist and bandleader who, starting in the 1950s, brought Afro-Puerto Rican music to the world stage, significantly influencing the development of salsa. His band, Cortijo y Su Combo, featuring the legendary vocalist Ismael "Maelo" Rivera, became famous for its innovative style: they popularized the bomba and plena rhythms, combined them with mambo and calypso, utilized improvisation, energetic live performances, and placed the rhythm section at the core of their sound. The group brought a street, carnival-like energy to clubs and television, breaking down social barriers. However, at the peak of their fame in 1962, the band broke up due to internal problems and scandals. After a difficult period, Cortijo attempted to revive his career in New York, and this album, released in 1971, was part of his comeback to the music scene.
