Don Cherry's "Mu" Second Part for the BYG label is a landmark in free jazz improvisation. The recordings, made on the same day by Don Cherry (trumpet, flutes, piano, bells) and drummer Ed Blackwell, both of whom previously worked with Ornette Coleman, merge their highly intuitive approach to improvisation with Cherry's exploration of folk music from diverse cultures. This synthesis imbued "Mu" with undeniable beauty, spiritual depth, and originality. The second part, inspired by Cherry's travels, features his playing on Indian and bamboo flutes, as well as references to South African musician Abdullah Ibrahim (Dollar Brand) and jazz drummer Albert "Tootie" Heath. These albums, more than fifty years old, remain just as fresh and innovative.
