The material for the album was recorded in 1970–1971 but was shelved at the time, remaining unreleased in the vaults until its official release in 2002. The recording sessions featured notable musicians including Aretha Franklin (keyboards/piano), Donny Hathaway (keyboards), Eric Gale (guitar), Bernard Purdie (drums), and Chuck Rainey (bass).
