The musical practices of the Adadi people from Atauro island serve to express both personal and communal emotions, including joy and sorrow. The Adadi, who number around 2,000 out of the island's 10,000 inhabitants, are the only one of the three ethno-linguistic groups to have preserved diverse musical traditions, although these traditions and their language are in serious danger of extinction. The music, performed using simple means such as yodeling, musical bow, mouth harp, gong, drum, and voice, is used in daily life, for example, during walks to the fields and harvesting palm wine, as well as at communal celebrations where it softens sadness and intensifies joy. Furthermore, some forbidden ritual songs are still remembered by the people, despite the interruption in the transmission of musical traditions caused by Christian missionaries in 1974.
